Whitby - Bird watching and Waterfront Trail walk, slow-mod, Karen Graham

Members and non-members welcome.

Approximately 2.5-3 hours in total; 1-1.5 hours (slow) exploring Thickson's Woods, meadow and lakefront to look for migratory birds; and, an optional waterfront trail walk (slow-moderate pace) for approximately 1-1.5 hours.

Please note that the bird watching will include uneven dirt trails and a grassy meadow (fairly flat); the waterfront trail for our walk is paved and fairly flat; practice tick safety.

A handful of naturalists formed a non-profit and purchased the woods to save it from logging in 1983. Thickson's Woods is the last remnant of old-growth white pines on the north shore of Lake Ontario. This area provides a vital resting place for countless migrating songbirds each spring and fall. In 2001, they protected an 8 1/2-acre meadow just north of the woods.

Bring water, snack, wear sturdy footwear, binoculars. Feel free to bring a portable stool or chair if you would like to sit during your bird watching.

Please look both ways when crossing the waterfront trail between Thickson's Woods and the meadow.

Directions: 401 to Thickson Road in Whitby and travel south to the waterfront trail. Free parking lot and roadside parking.
